Bio
Hazy Malaze formed in 2002. This soul power trio with singer guitarist Neal Casal, drummer Dan Fadel and bassist Jeff Hill released a cracking debut album in 2003. They have released a total of three albums, Hazy Malaze (2003), Blackout Love (2005) and Connections (2009) and have toured throughout the US and Europe.
This group brings out something new in Neal’s voice, a sour to counter the sweet, a bit more wolf under the sheepskin than many might have expected. Hazy Malaze sound like what might have happened if the Meters had passed the peace pipe with Little Feat’s Lowell George. Hazy Malaze provides a rough edged counterpoint to the sensitivity of Casal’s solo work, revealing new facets of an artist always on the road to something new.
Neal Casal: Acclaimed singer songwriter for the past 16 years, Neal has nine solo albums tucked neatly under his belt. Neal has performed and contributed on albums of Willie Nelson, Rufus Wainwright, Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion, Tift Merritt, Duncan Sheik, Gin Wigmore, Fruit Bats, Vetiver and many others. Neal joined Ryan Adams and The Cardinals in 2005 still maintaining his allegiance to Hazy Malaze and his solo career, he recorded two studio albums and an EP with The Cardinals. The Cardinals dissolved in March 2009, which gave Neal more time to focus on Haze Malaze and his own solo career.
Jeff Hill: A highly sought after bass player, while living in Chicago in the early nineties he was on the music scene playing with jazzmen Von Freeman, Ira Sullivan, Johnny Frigo, Lin Halliday, Jodie Christian, and Curtis Fuller, among others. Jeff was also a member of the Sabertooth Jazz Quintet and Ted Sirota’s Rebel Souls Ensemble. Jeff moved to NYC and in early 1999 he began touring and recording as a bassist and background vocalist with acclaimed singer songwriter Rufus Wainwright. He has also performed and or recorded with Teddy Thompson, Shooter Jennings, Martha Wainwright, Joan as Policewoman, The Grey Race, Page McConnell and The Poison Tree among many others. Jeff has been a member of the Brooklyn based band Goats In Trees since 1997 and formed Hazy Malaze in 2002.
Dan Fadel: Rock-solid skin-pounding drummer Dan Fadel was in the Orlando based band Kow. Kow formed in June 1996, but their roots go back to the start of the decade in one of the first bands in Orlando to fuse funk and rock. Bandleader Ray Ippolito knew the Fadel brothers, who were then playing in their own Manhattan-based funk outfit. The Fadels helped the Floridians get a gig near their New Jersey hometown. Kow switches from ’70s style L.A. fusion to green-onions Memphis funk.
